Dance can has been practiced since ancient times. Dance does not leave any implements or tools like stone hammers, spears or writing sticks, but from drawings on the walls of tombs and caves, we can observe and surmise that dance has been an important part of early civilization. Tracing back civilization, dance has been extensively used in rituals and in storytelling. These rituals and stories were passed on from generation to generation, through dance.
Dance is composed of several movements in a series based on a rhythm and usually performed to a musical piece. Some people love to dance while others have no inclination for dance at all. Dance is used in rituals and ceremonies celebrating religion and its intricate processes have been in practice for a long time. Dance movements express excitement and joy, sorrow and pain.
Parents are often encouraged to enroll their children in dance classes while their kids are still young. This is more so when a parent desires that her child becomes a ballet artist (or gymnast). Because the kid starts out young, her bones become stronger and her motor skills improve. As the child’s artistry is developed, she also grows to be sensitive to feelings and emotions.
With the help of dancing, a child learns to analyze and react to daily activities, responding to simple instructions with comprehension. When the trainer instructs the child to stretch her arms slowly, she responds, imitating the trainer’s instructions and also stretching slowly. As her comprehension improves, her grasp of the things happening all around her becomes more solid. She is then able to communicate her thoughts, ideas, problems and questions better.
There are those who suggest that a child must be enrolled in dance class as early as 1-2 years old. If the child is not too shy, is inquisitive and curious, she will certainly adapt to the new experiences that a dance class is giving her even at that young age. However, there are children who are quite shy by nature and would be unwilling to join an unfamiliar group. If your child is shy, do not force her at this stage. You can wait until she grows to be less shy, or bring her regularly to the dance class until the place, the trainers and the other children are already familiar to her, and she decides to join the class on her own.
What dance style or form you will enroll your child in is not really as important as finding a good trainer who knows how to handle and teach small children. Children are naturally curious and full or energy. Looking for a dance class with trainers who can harness this curiosity and energy should be most important. Dance style can be chosen based on what you have exposed your child to. If you have been showing ballet dances, she could be interested in ballet. If you have been showing videos of tap dances, she might want to study tap dancing.
Enrolling your child in dance class is going to be an adventure for you and your child. It will surely come with beautiful moments, lots of learning, and loads of fun.
