How To Moonwalk

It's been more than 25 years since Michael Jackson first moonwalked across concert stages and music television. Now a whole new generation is learning the dance move. If you need to learn to moonwalk you are in luck. All you need is some time to practice and follow these steps.


Step 1:

Choose your shoes. Before you get started it helps to have the right shoes. Check out the soles of your shoes looking for a smooth, slick sole. Traction will slow you down and cause some jerks in your step so find a slick pair of shoes. Some people start practicing with just a pair of socks on their feet. If you do this you will still need to find the shoes and practice with them before your hit the floor to show off your moves.


Step 2:

Find the best floor surface. Like your shoes, the floor surface should also be smooth. Glossy wood floors, sheet vinyl or dance floors are often the best option because they are slick and do not have bumps or gaps that can slow you down or cause friction under your feet.


Step 3:

Start with your legs together slightly. Before you begin the move you want to stand with your legs together and feet no more than four inches apart. Your feet should be flat on the floor.


Step 4:



Move your right leg back. Point your toes and slide your foot back until your knee is bent and only your toes are touching the ground about eight inches behind your left foot. Don't jerk your foot back, glide it slowly.
Step 5:

Slide your left foot back. Now repeat the motion you made in step four with the opposite (left) leg. Push your heel back and slide your left foot along the floor until it passes the toes of your right foot. You now have the basic movement.

Step 6:

Practice repeating the movement. Practice sliding your foot back in step four then step five several times in a slow motion.


Step 7:



Speed up to the pace of the music. Put on some music then practice your moonwalk so that you glide your feet and shift in time with the music. Make the moves fluid not stilted or jerky.
Step 8:

Add some flair (optional). Once you have the basic move you can personalize it by adding some flair. Move your head and neck or your arms to coincide with your moonwalk in any way that adds your own personal style and statement to your dance move.


Learning to moonwalk is easy. All you need is the right surface and some time to practice. Put on the music, preferably something reminiscent of the 1980s and Michael Jackson's popular days. Then go ahead and have some fun, moonwalk your way across the dance floor.
